A hedge fund sponsor usually refers to the legal entity that actually "manages" the funds. Often funds are set up as a General Partner/Limited Partner structure, similar to a PE firm, with the GP interest held by the management company or "sponsor." The GP then manages the fund's assets, with the LPs being passive investors in the partnership.
