Background Check - proof of unpaid part time
Thanks in advance to anyone who jumps in.
Here's my story:
I worked for a very small "non-profit" startup company for part time. I did some research and model building work. I did do what I said on resume without exaggeration. I didn't have a title there (since "company" very small and unpaid), so I used a title on resume that described my work there (in the line of , "modeling", "analyst", "researcher" etc.). The title thing maybe the only part that's questionable, anything else is fairly accurate. I worry about problems caused by exaggeration so I tried to be careful here. But again the title may be the place I exaggerated a bit.
I signed some paper work when I joined the "firm", but didn't really know too much about it. They said they're registered as a company, but I won't be surprised if they just say they are a school club. My future employer wants to verify this experience but unpaid employer won't prove anything for me. I didn't have a particularly good relationship with them but I did what I said I did.
Now the only things I can prove myself are things like interview emails before I joined, termination email, communication emails and work I did there. Do you think these will be enough? Will I fail the check?
I appreciate your help and apologize if I am being too paranoid. Any views and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I have had the same thing on my resume before, no one contacted me ever about it during the background check, now working full-time. Doubt it will be an issue, companies export their background checking to an outside company, im sure that this is quite common for college kids.
Thanks. I thought it won't be a problem as well but HR did contact me after the vendor said they couldn't verify this. I offered to prove my case with things I listed in my post. But they didn't get back to me. I guess now no news is good news? Should I follow up if they don't get back in a couple of days?
I doubt you would need to follow up, with background checks no news is always good news. Plus, since you ACTUALLY interned there and have nothing to hide, I don't think you should worry at all. I would just leave it be, they will not reneg because of something like this - FYI, it is required by law for a company to tell you if they reneg because of a background check and the exact finding.
Something similar happened to me, had no issues. Maybe you can give them the contact of someone who can prove you worked there.
You mean like my colleagues / team member? Thanks that could work. Wondering if I should follow up if they don't get back to me after I offered to prove my case with other things? Or simply ignore it since no news is good news? Thanks
Yes. If they don't follow then don't follow up with them.
so what happened? did you make it through?
Do employers do background checks on one-day unpaid externship/job shadowing opportunities? (Originally Posted: 01/30/2016)
So, I was selected for a one-day unpaid job shadowing opportunity. I couldn't make it, but on my resume I want to put being selected as an honor and make it seem I had attended the externship. Will future employers do thorough background checks on these opportunities since they're not actual jobs?
Probably not but it'd be super awkward in an interview if someone decided to ask you about it and you said you didn't even go. I really don't think they carry much weight, anyway.
Ridiculous
