End of summer limbo

I got the big call earlier this afternoon...

I worked at a regional office at a BB over the summer, and really enjoyed my experience there. My reviews were great, and people told me I would probably be getting the offer. But I got a call from my staffer today telling me that I would be on "hold" indefinitely. (2 weeks since my internship ended) They encouraged me to go through recruiting, refer them if I need any recommendations. It looks like they are going through with their recruiting process as well. I've never heard of this happening before, what exactly does this mean and does anyone have any relevant experiences to share?

Thanks.
