Entering into industry in my 30's

For the most of the last decade up until 2 yrs ago I was a Trader at a Prop Firm. I guess i was considered a "Day Trader", but instead of trading in my boxers from home, i was trading in a legitimate firm. Traded well for a number of years until the market burst in 2008. Left trading two years ago and went back to school and will be getting degree in accounting. I would like to get back into the Finance field again but am worried that due to my age (33) Is there any realistic way that i can possibly get a job with either a investment banking firm or Private Equity. Im sure there are many of you out there like myself.

It's possible considering your background. The formal "recruiting tracks" are just part of the vast spectrum of hiring / employment options. You need to be specific in your goals and be opportunistic given that you are older and don't have the luxury of doing stuff for the hell of it.

I came into Asset Management at 29 with total shit credentials, so I'm convinced that anyone can get the job they want if they make the effort, are smart, and are realistic (ie: GS doesn't take you so you go to a MM firm....boo hoo, it's the same thing and you can transfer as an experienced hire later)

I will be starting my training program as a brand-new associate in IB at a BB after ten years in the military. I will be 33 in September having never worked in finance before.

I would say you have a great shot, just not through traditional recruiting channels. You have a great 'story' for interviews in the fact that you are going to school and running a business while getting your degree.

Best of luck. A lot of people told me I had no chance of breaking in because of anything from my background to my age. Guess what, I got 4 BB and 2 MM/BTQ IBD offers.

Do not ever give up.

I got in at my age of 30, no problem. there are so many different way and time to get in with so many difference stories.

Cheers mate!
