From Equity Research to Consulting?

I've spoken to many about the exit opportunities within ER, and there isn't much beyond moving from the sell-side to the buy-side. But what about all the industry knowledge you learn from covering those specific companies? Could you leverage it during interviews/entering the consulting industry? Has it been done? Can it be done? And what do I need to do in order to better my chances of moving into consulting long-term?
