Grabbing Coffee with Big4 Consultant Manager?

Hey everyone,

After going to info sessions, speaking with one consultant manager closely at the session, getting a first round interview, extending a thank you and asking for interview advice to that manager, passing the first round and moving on to the next round, I am now grabbing coffee with that manager before the second round of interviews.

What exactly should I say? Just ask more general questions or just get to know her? A bit stuck on how I should enter the meeting, what to expect, and how I should lead the conversation as we have spoken briefly before/I've gone to an info session etc etc.

Also, should/do I buy her coffee?

Lastly, how long should I expect our chat to be? To be honest, I'm on average really good at keeping conversations flowing, but of course I am worried that being so far in the process what topics to discuss. For example, what's the culture would almost be rude to ask BC at this stage I should honestly know it, etc etc. Should I plan to only take an hour of her time? Or 20 min? We are meeting at 5pm if that helps in anyway.

Thanks for ALL ADVICE in advance guys!

1) Offer to pay for the coffee, but I doubt she'll let you. Seeing how you're still in the interviewing process, its a 2-way street, and they are still trying to sell you just as much as their trying to see if they want you. She's also a manager, you're a student, so she can afford the coffee.

2) I'd plan for the coffee chat to last 20-30 mins; if it goes longer, than thats good, but keep in mind people have their own lives, schedule and work to attend to; also, (in general) an hour out of the day is actually a lot to ask of someone.

3) In terms of the content of the chat, I'd say keep it a mixture between conversational and informational. You dont want to ask her questions you already did, but at the same time she's not meeting with you solely to hang out (if she is than congrats to you). I would take this time to pick her brain on her experiences, the different industries (do you know which one you're going into? or is it still up in the air?), if you dont know yet now would be a good time to get more candid perspective on the various industries, the work they do in it, what projects exists, what the day to day is like, what expectations are for someone in your role, her perspective on the firm, etc.

Keep in mind that she could have easily just said no to the coffee, so agreeing to meet with you indicates that she thinks you're a promising person. Regardless of how it turns out, I would recommend that you stay in touch with her from a career perspective. Always nice to have someone a few levels above you to give bounce things off of, but also, you're eventually going to cross some of the obstacles she did, so having a resource to reach out to would be helpful. Just my 2 cents.
