Am I missing something?
GS industry groups do their
GS industry groups do their own M&A

They
do have an M&A leadership group where the very senior M&A guys sit (Levy, etc), but everyone else in the group does menial work (kind of like sponsors used to be--profile heavy, coverage heavy, sponsors has changed recently). All of the heavy lifting comes out of the industry groups and as there are now senior M&A execution and coverage bankers in every industry group. Many times there is no one senior from the M&A leadership group on a deal unless it's extremely high profile. To keep it simple, industry groups effectively execute their own M&A deals (and everything else, everyone just assumes industry groups should do all the work, so ECM, sponsors, lev fin etc don't do jack sh$t and just dump on industry groups, guess its good or bad depending on view). The job of an industry analyst/associate sucks, you just work all the time, but you will get decent execution experience (well maybe less so in this market)
