How should I utilize an ad-hoc B-school rec?
Hey all, It turns out I have a family friend who is good friends with the Dean of a B-school I’m applying to. This friend is an alum of the school, but he knows the Dean personally, not simply b/c he's an alum. 2-3 months ago, this guy offered to recommend me to the Dean. Since I’ve already got my two official recs, should I just email this guy, let him know my app & interview have just been completed, and ask if he is still willing to recommend me, and just let him take it from there? Thanks so much for any input.
Yes, if he knows the Dean, he can just call/write/email him personally. That would be more effective and direct than having him write an offical recommendation. I would just ask him to put a good word in for you with the Dean, and assuming he is comfortable with that (since they're good friends), he will probably just get in touch with him directly. Then the Dean can affect your application in whatever way he sees fit.
