Infra PE at Macquarie: good exit opps and rep?

Hi all,

First post here, wanted to start with saying thank you to everyone here for sharing your experiences and taking your time to help everyone out.

I am in the process to start applying for SA positions 2017, and as many others here I aspire to transition into PE after a couple of years.

With that said, I have a friend working at Macquarie in their MIRA division in London, i.e. their Infra PE division, and I have been speaking to my friend about opportunities for a SA position in MIRA next year. From my understanding MIRA seems to be one of few places that offers newly grads a position on the buy-side straight from uni. To me this seems like a great opportunity to gain a good skillset for a future exit to corporate PE.

After browsing around the forum though, the general consensus seem to favour the "traditional" route of two years of M&A / LevFin before trying an exit into PE. I'm really curious of why and would love to hear some insights from more experienced guys about this.

My questions are:
What is the rep of Macquiarie MIRA infra on the street?
What are the opportunities to lateral into corporate PE from e.g. Macquarie MIRA (or similar infra funds / very niched funds)?
Is the "traditional" route of M&A / LevFin more preferable and why in that case?

I will of course apply to many SA positions but this is interesting to me since I feel I have a good chance to be invited for interviews at MIRA thanks to my friend referring me.

Thank you!

Best,
