Instagram on Wall Street
Stumbled upon this WSJ article about Instagram's plans to hire quants working at investment banks or hedge funds, and was wondering how many of you would be interested in that sort of role?
Facebook Inc.’s photo-sharing app plans to double its engineering staff in New York this year to 150 people. In particular, it is looking for machine-learning experts, many of whom work for hedge funds or investment banks. These “recovering quants”—as Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger calls them—will allow Instagram to more personally tailor its feed and other features to its 600 million users.
I guess the fierce competition for the brightest engineers in Silicon Valley has led Instagram to look elsewhere, and what better place than Wall Street. They're looking for experts in AI, specifically machine learning, so not sure how many qualified candidates they'll find.
Would you monkeys prefer to work at the more traditional banks and hedge funds or the Silicon Valley-esque companies setting up shop in NYC?
