With thousands of Verizon workers on strike now, it makes me wonder if what they are asking for is completely unachievable. Their complaint is renewing a labor contract, which prohibits the firm from sending some workers away for months on remote locations far away from their families. This seems like a reasonable demand, however, in the current economy it is not easy either for a company to adjust its' business model.
What makes me wonder is if job security is completely dead in this market. Trends and business models are constantly changing, which affects the amount of labor needed for a certain sector, and it is usually hard for an average worker to adjust his skill set right away. It takes time and education.
What skill set should young workers acquire in order to be marketable and "secure" in the current labor market? Anyone have any view on this?
