I think applying online is generally not successful. However, sometimes it works. I know someone who secured an internship at a top PE firm just by applying online. So, if you have the time apply online. If you have more time, network to try to get the interview.

i go to a non-target and
i go to a non-target and applied for a Lehman position right from the website that yieled an interview (it was for another division, not ops)
Lehman does it slightly different than the rest of the BB's though. the non-target website gives you the direct email address of that divisions recruiter who must actually read them instead of trashing them
