Is the jam band scene even that big anymore? When I was in high school it was blowing up, with Phish (who of course had been around forever), String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, Frog Brigade, etc. and then there were concerts like the original Bonnaroo which I was fortunate enough to attend... But I havent heard anything about any of these guys since pretty much Phish went on hiatus... And I follow music pretty closely... Music fests are filled with bands like Raconteurs, MGMT, Vampire Weekend, and so on. Which I like better anyways... Jam bands get tedius after awhile...
Never was a big Phish or Trey fan, so I can see how it would slip below my radar... Didnt Trey have troubles with heroin awhile back too? I will admit that Guyute is an awesome song...
Guyute sure was an ugly pig. I think the scene is still very big. Each of the Phish guys have had their own projects since the start of the hiatus. One of Trey's was to get as fucked up on oxycontin as possible. That was a success.
There are plenty of great, younger bands still keeping the jam scene alive. Some of the bigger bands around right now would be Widespread Panic, Gov't Mule, Umphrey's Mcgree, Sound Tribe Sector 9, etc. I suppose its not as big as it was when Phish & the Dead were both touring together, but it took years for Phish & the GD to build those followings and there are a lot of bands that look like they could emerge as the "next" Phish or GD right now. Phish guys didn't do a whole lot on their own...they were all pretty sparse with their shows (tour here, tour there) while bands like Umphrey's were (still are) doing 150+ shows every year and picking up huge followings.
I'm debating making the trip to VA to see all or some of the first 3 shows or just waiting for the tour. Decisions, decisions...
ill be there
