Professional Recommendations

Hi,

I have been working part-time within Finance (BO) at a BB for the past 2 years and will soon be moving to FT IB at a MM. However, I have a very good relationship with my boss at this Finance position. She loves the work that I do and has always gone to bat for me.

I have been prepping for the possibility of going to get my MBA within the next 5 years (just took the GMATs) and am wondering:

  1. Should I ask her to write me a professional recommendation right before I leave? I know many bschool apps require the recs be written directly on the application online, so is having my own copy necessary?

  2. Would this BO recommendation be useful? Especially as it will have been from a job 5 years before I actually apply for bschool?

  3. Is a professional recommendation like this useful in future job hunting or in any other way? From BO position, and not from the most recent job?

I've never had any experience regarding this since I'm just stating out my career. Poked around the old posts but didn't find much. Thanks guys, and sorry in advance if I'm beating a dead horse =(

  1. Not sure if you need your own copy now. Chances are, you'll need her to fill out more stuff again later.

  2. Should still be useful for b-school. Although if you've been at this job for 2 years and will be at the next job for 5, a rec from the next job might carry more weight.

  3. Recommendations are always helpful but it's probably better to give future potential employers your current boss' contact info as a reference. If I was doing the hiring, I'd prefer talking to the person live and asking questions than have the candidate hand me a recommendation.

So in summary, I think it's unnecessary to get a rec now. Just keep in touch with her so that in the future, you can get one when you have a specific reason to do so.
