Family Office Interviews (Soros, MSD, etc.)?

Anyone have experience interviewing with Soros, MSD, or other family offices? Have interviews coming up with a couple of them and looking for information on what the process is like/what they look for.

Thank you.

Family offices can be very varied - some do a whole lot of primary investing (for example, the Pritzker family offices), while others are more focused on resource allocation between different underlying funds and the closest they would come to doing a direct investment would be some sort of coinvestment. Because of this variance, there's not really a typical recruiting process that you can generalize for family offices - their only real common point is usually a longer time horizon.

Unfortunately, I can't add much about Soros or MSD recruiting.

Super fit-based interview process.
Also, a lot of, "Tell me about a time when..." leaders.

I was offered, but decided that was not the route for me.

newbie88Excuse the ignorance, but what's a family office?

Most super high net worth people have a family office to handle their tax, estate, trust, planning, foundation, house, etc. It is generally staffed mostly by CPAs and private banker types to handle all of their LP investments in hedge funds and private equity. Some family offices have in-house private investment arms that work much like a PE fund where the family is the only LP. The investment arm is generally the usual suspects you would find in PE or hedge funds depending on the strategy.

As for the interview, it obviously depends on what your focus would be in that office, but fit is usually a huge part of it because these offices are typically pretty small (under 15 people). That's not to say the technical stuff is not important because unlike banking, there generally isn't a 4 or 5 level hierarchy to check your work.

Depends what type of analyst role it is and what kind of previous experience you have. If you are working a PE type role, expected to get paid in line with your typical MM PE analyst and do all the same shit an analyst would do anywhere else. The fee structure may be different than 2 and 20 because the family likely isn't going to pay a big management fee for their PE guys to just sit on the money.

Please don't tell me you just asked what an unnamed family office's culture is like.
