References - One shop prior

Hi, I have a interview coming up and i need professional references. I have interned at only one shop prior to my current employer so I will use them as a reference but what should i do with my current employer. WIll i look bad if i don't include them as a referance? How do i go about it? if i leave my current emloyer out how do i explain this to them?

They wouldn't expect you to put your current employer as a reference if you're interviewing. That's job suicide and everyone knows it. Use the references from your internship, but think about whether there might be more than 1 person who can speak to your abilities. Also consider any volunteer work you've done. Just because you didn't get paid for it doesn't mean those people/organizations can't be great references on some of the traits the employer is looking for.

One piece of advice, make sure to prepare your references. Have a conversation or send them a few paragraphs reminding them of what you did, outlining the opportunity you're interviewing for and the kinds of skills that would be important in that job. You can look at this as a guideline, although it's specifically geared toward MBA program applications http://bit.ly/Nj5A7

Good luck!
