If they have enough power, they can actually create a job for you -- no interviews needed.

Why don't you concentrate on getting an offer based on merit?
I think having networks and the networking skill is also essential for the business world. In a way, it is a "merit", IMO.
MDs have strong input and can usually get you interviews. As FinanceFury suggested, it all is based on your relationship with them. Close family friend or the like - you're in good shape. Just some guy you networked with - will be much harder to crack.
