What makes a cover letter stand out? Does mine?

Needing some help with my cover letter. I am a senior, and will graduate Summer 2014. I am applying for jobs in energy finance. I wrote this cover letter for my first resume submission and didn't hear back from the company.

Would y'all mind critiquing it for content and formatting?

What makes a cover letter stand out is what you put in it. Instead of saying that you hope your experience will benefit them, tell them your experience that will benefit them. Put what you did as an employee on the energy desk that would benefit them.

I've always read that it's good to start the cover letter with who you are and what you currently do and then say how you found the job and that you want it. sooooo,

My name is John Smith, a recent graduate from CYZ University and currently employed by ABC Firm on their energy trading desk. I saw the posting on CYZ Universities careers page and after reading about the position and your ABC Firm I am extremely interested in the position. I have attached my resume for consideration.

Also, if you only applied to one firm and didn't hear back from them... don't get discouraged. That's just one firm. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Cover letters are more about blending in, rather than standing out. They generally aren't read, but if you have one and you do something ridiculous like make some sob-story emotional appeal, or have errors, it will only count against you. Use a decent template, and make sure you comment on anything unique you bring to the company.

What is a good template, you ask? Here are several: http://mbacareers.wharton.upenn.edu/student/files/clsamples06.pdf

This is true, however I have never once seen a cover letter from a candidate. When I get books of resumes, they are usually all stapled together in a big deck....no cover letters.

This is true. I will never forget the time my boss showed me the stack of resumes he had to review that it made through HR screening. The stack was 2 inches thick

So while I have some experienced people in my thread... is the cover letter outdated? Should I bother submitting one to companies when I am applying online?

Also, the career fair for my school is coming up. I was planning on researching the companies I like, and tailoring a cover letter for each one. Would I be wasting my time?
