Which offer to take up?

A friend of mine goes to a target but is merely a freshman. I figured I don't know enough so i'll post his question here...

He has the option of going to a small ib boutique to work in a three person office in new york that includes the global head of m&a of the firm.

The other option is BB pwm.

Which should he take when keeping in mind he plans to go into banking/pe/hf/vc/consulting?

Just in case, yes, he will still have time to party as the internship doesn't start for a while and ends early.

IBD all the way. If you get to do substantial work, especially in a small office, you will be much better off than wasting time doing PWM, even if it has a better name. For freshman the most important thing is experience because you are not always expected to have an amazing internship.

IBD is definitely the preferred choice.

Yup, everyone's correct.

IBD is the definite choice. Having high finance on your resume sets you leagues above people that don't in the recruiting process.

So, he's narrowed his life goals down, then? Just a choice between banking/pe/hf/vc/consulting... In any case, a freshman internship with real finance exposure and even a possibility of some responsibility (i.e. the IBD choice) will help him even if he ends up wanting to work for an NGO.
