i'm trying to understand why a firm like JPMorgan 's Asset Management department wouldn 't just manage equities in-house instead of outsourcing it to hedge funds or mutual funds wouldn't the trading cost be lower? also, if they were underwriters for an IPO , they can get an amazing price on it....

Standard deviation vs. Semi standard deviation as measures of risk in finance
Some suggest that semi standard deviation is more relevant because it doesn’t incorporate returns above the mean or any threshold in the computation of risk. I have calculated the semi standard deviation (from the mean and from a threshold) and experimented with both n and n-1 in the denominator,...

Big 4 Consulting vs Asset Management
Which one should I choose? I know people will say "it all depends on what you want to do," but what if I don't know what I want to do 10 years down the line and I'm pretty sure I want to get an MBA eventually? Things I value more are best exit opps and high-quality training received on the job. The...
Wells Capital Management
Any of you guys ever heard of this place? They apparently have 300B in AUM so it's no slouch of a fund. I just personally have never heard of them as they are based out in SF, which is a little off my radar. Anyway, I interviewed for their investment analyst program and I was wondering if anyone had...

Hi guys, 1. Let's take a balance sheet of any Asset Management company (Aberdeen, let's say). Now, we all know that Aberdeen largely invests investors' money and not its own, how does it make its balance sheets? Why do investments still appear even though the investments don't belong to them? 2....

Hobo's are better predictors than the Nikkei index.
Coucou! Okay, so smart investors don't randomly risk their own money or theirs clients money, right? A smart investor uses data, years of white knuckle experince and looking at how other index work. That's what a smart investor would do. And why not, through years of experince, the wisdom of "Money...

Sorry for the impending essay.... I've recently graduated from economics at a UK target uni. I still ended up with a 2:1, but there's...
