Models used in Private Equity
What models that you learn in banking are also used in PE? Just lbo models or do you also sometimes do DCFs, comps , merger models, sum-of-parts, etc? I'm assuming you need to be able to build 3-statement operating models to power the lbo model?

Pay differences between MF, upper MM, smaller shops
What are the pay scales generally for megafunds, upper middle market firms, and smaller firms? How much would a KKR first...
What's YOUR Opinion Of Regulation S?
Is there a better or quicker way to stimulate direct foreign investment into U.S. companies? Shuld the holding period be reduced to 180 or even 90 days? Any down side? Should there be a minimum of a $5 million block of shares? What do you think?
Megafund vs. MM Private Equity
Approaching the end of the year once again there are quite a few discussions and rumours floating around between analysts in the city. Who is going where, what opportunities are people looking at and what are other analysts considering a good move after your analyst stint. Given the changing...
Acquiring shares for control
I (we) are trying to acquire a greater percentage stake in a formerly public company. We currently have a significant control position, but would like to sell the company and require over 90% equity stake to not have to deal with sign-offs from the many disparate shareholders. There are no...
Private Equity Associate to Hedge Fund Transition
Anybody made the transition? How were you able to gain the public markets experience needed for recruiting? And how did you get around the stigma from hopping into PE after banking (instead of HF)? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

Dear all,
L.E.K. Consulting to Private Equity

What is the appeal of mega-funds?
Just out of curiosity, would love to hear people's views on this: So many of us finance guys spend all their time worrying about getting into the top group at whatever bank so they can move to mega funds in private equity or big hedge funds, where the lifestyle can be close to if not just as bad as...

GS Analysts Fired For PE Recruiting
As we all know a first year analyst has to make a decision around this time of the year: a) take part in PE / HF recruiting for a job that would start after his/her two year commitment, or b) be a good monkey and stay out of the recruiting process because his/her firm prohibits it / it is a conflict...
Interview horror story! Felt need to share. (kind of long)
I will exclude the name of the firm and MD but maybe someone can figure it (I doubt it though). I just back from a P.E. firm and know for a fact I will not get hired for a s.a. position. Technically I won’t know till Thursday but it’s pretty obvious I won’t get a shot. The P.E. firm is a...

I have a 2nd round interview coming up with a secondary PE fund. They do mostly LP secondaries of funds that are majority invested. HELP: Reneging PE offer? Thoughts?
I'm an IBD analyst (PWP,Centerview, allen co) who signed to start at a wellknown FOF in a year and I'm thinking of reneging for a MM buyout PE shop. MM PE shop doesn't know I signed with FOF . What are the chances of me being skrewed over (ignoring the hate I will get from the headhunter).
LEK vs. Booz vs. Parthenon
Hey monkeys, I received offers at all three firms for a summer position (they will explode in a couple weeks) and I am coming from a target consulting school (Dartmouth/Duke). Last summer, I interned at a small VC firm in Boston. I have no idea what I want to do after consulting, whether that's...
Lost High Schooler, looking for any guidance
Hey guys, so I just joined this community because I heard it was very informative. Although I haven't yet sifted through each section of the forum, I intend on doing so after I post this. I was recently accepted to NYU Stern and I'm currently pondering on career choices. I read up on a lot of...
Leaving your PE firm
I've been working at my current PE fund for less than a year now, after breaking from IB . I must admit that when I took the job, my motivation was more to get out of banking rather than because I thought the fund was great. I was really getting killed badly in IB , and not getting paid much to...

Would it be very tough...
By the time you are 40 - The long term finance career paths
I am interested in some statistics of the long term finance career path. What are your estimates? (1) Among the first-year analyst class, the percentage of those who are still in finance at the age of 40. (2) For those who went to PE after analyst years,by the age of 40, the percentage of those who...

Have offers from Houlihan Lokey, Jefferies, and Terra Firma (UK private equity company) - all for London office. Just wondering which do you think will be best for Silicon Valley VC? Edit: Regardless of which offer I take I imagine I will have to do a MBA in the US before moving into VC . Some...

MM to MF after HBS
If one doesn't end up at a megafund after 2 years in investment banking, but rather, ends up at a MM shop for the pre-MBA stint, would it be possible to transition to a megafund after 2 years at HBS or do megafunds only take post-MBA associates that worked at megafunds prior to H/S/W? My guess is...

JPM Groups for PE
I've gotten a lot of mixed info on this topic. Obviously M&A is good, but I hear different things about SLF. Clearly a big group at JPM but I hear they don't actually do much of the technical work and that it's weak for PE? How about financial sponsors? What do they do that coverage/ M&A doesn't?...

Retail Leasing - good entry point for acquisitions or development, or career suicide?
I was told by a director of acquisition at a small family office (they primarily buy multifamily with ground floor retail) that it would be a good idea to work as a retail leasing broker (tenant rep) if one wanted to do acquisitions. His logic was that if you developed a great relationship with...

Degrees and certificates
To get into investment banking all you need is a bachelor's degree. After a few years all you need to get into PE , hedge funds, VC etc. is the experience in IB . So can you basically have a successful career and move up to being perhaps vice president in a PE firm with only a bachelor's degree,...
