Lehman's Investment Management, going once, going twice...

Ahhh, just making sure you are all on your toes. There were three bidders battling this afternoon for the failed Lehman Brother's investment management unit, with an offer as high as $2.15 billion.

Bain Capital Partners and Hellman & Friedman were the confirmed high rollers, the others remained nameless all afternoon.

Neuberger Berman walked away the winner, taking over in September for the referenced purse.

Hey, they should have put it on eBay. Who doesn't want a bankrupt investment firm for Christmas?

Goldman 4Q Loss Over $2 Billion?

The jungle drums have started beating over the past week or so, and everyone seems to be trying to pinpoint Goldman's 4th quarter loss before it is announced. The Wall Street Urinal suggested a $2 billion loss, or about $5 per share. Earlier, Credit Suisse thought they were padding enough by raising their loss estimate from $2.50 a share to $4 a share. Now UBS is predicting a loss of $5.50 per share, well over $2 billion.

Any Goldman guys care to weigh in on the subject? (Anonymously, of course...)

JP Morgan Layoffs Begin Anew

JP Morgan

Not counting all those former WaMu wannabe cuts announced yesterday, JP Morgan is swinging the axe again big time starting today.

http://clusterstock.alleyinsider.com/2008/12/jp-mo...

Clusterstock:

Cuts today came in the Technology, Media & Telecom and the Derivatives Collateral Management groups, the person said. Tomorrow cuts are expected in the Syndicated Leveraged Finance group and the public finance group. Further cuts are expected among analysts and associates, especially in the Chicago office.

Things must be difficult in the Jamie Dimon camp. After they took on Bear Stearns and now WaMu, it must be tough hearing the phrase 'redundancy' all the time.

Well, according to an article on CNN today, we might only have to worry about the tanking market and (surprise, surprise) "recession" for another five years, because, they claim, there is going to be a terrorist attack somewhere in the world by 2013. And, really, where do YOU think it will end up? East bumchuck? Probably not.

The weapon of mass destruction of choice? Experts are saying it will be biological rather than nuclear.

And, the experts are warning that the US government will need to be more aggressive in limiting the possible damages that the threat of bio warfare presents, but that it will be "costly".

Banned Site

After the brief, yet alarming, scare at Merrill Lynch offices today in which CNBC.com was deemed to contain material 'inconsistent with ML electronic policy' and thus BLOCKED for a period of time (screengrabs: http://clusterstock.alleyinsider.com/2008/12/merri... ), it got us wondering what other sites are blocked for you guys at work?

Hopefully WallStreetOasis, Clusterstock, DealBreaker, CNBC, and countless other bloggy resources are at your disposal. But what about other more risque timewasters like CollegeHumor, ESPN, LOLcats and straight up 'adult content'? We're not asking you to get banned, barred, or fired, just give us a shout with some noticeable sites that your well-intentioned employers believe to be unacceptable.

WSO T-Shirt Slogan Contest

Fellow Primates,

Now that we have the new logo selected I figured we could have an entertaining T-Shirt Slogan Contest.

Go ahead, throw out your best 1 (or 2) liners!

Let out all the weird, bitter, sarcastic, or just plain horrible things you've been wanting to scream to the world. Feel free to submit images and/or design ideas as well.

The contest ends on Sunday, Dec. 14 and the top 3 slogans will be made into beautiful new WSO T-Shirt (sold at cost in honor of the bear market!!). The winners will get theirs free, of course.

Good luck,

The contest ends on Sun Dec. 14. Get Creative Wall Street Nation!

WSO Rumor Mill: More Layoffs coming at DB, HSBC...and BoA

Some industry insiders have the following rumors to report. Some of this may not be news to you and none of this can be verified, but we thought we would at least give everyone a heads up so if you are in one of these divisions you can take the proper steps to prepare for some (potentially) grim news.

  • * On December 8th, Deutsche Bank may announce further layoffs in Capital Mkts / S&T in the New York office.
  • * HSBC is planning on having layoffs to IBD and S&T in London before year end

The Thanksgiving holiday is over and, now it's time to get back to work. First order of business? Laying off all those WaMu employees who actually thought they would become a part of the JP Morgan Chase family.

LA Times has the full story - http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-wamu2-2008de...

9,200 jobs in total will be cut. 4,000 will be notified up front before the end of January, while the rest will be kept dangling and eventually axed before end of 2009.

Roulette

Everyone knows that predicting where the market will be 1 year from now is a stupid waste of time. There are too many changing factors to make an informed decision.

However, this annual ritual is reported on and analyzed with delight anyway. Bloomberg reports that analysts from UBS and Morgan Stanley are throwing caution to the wind and BOTH predicting rallies and gains for stocks next year. Do tell!

Proving once again that it isn't a good idea to spurn suitors with deep pockets, Yahoo! is in talks again with Microsoft to sell out for $20 billion - less than half the amount they were offered over the summer. Oh, and the idiots on the board that rejected that offer? GONE.

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/ind...

Not sure where the final valuation will end up share price-wise, but the earlier offer was at $33 a share. I'm guessing the investors are wishing they had that $33 now that the share price is $11.50.

UBS Execs to payback their bonuses

suck-it.jpg

It's got to suck to be a former UBS exec these days, but payback is a bitch. CNN reports that some $18.45 million that was paid out in bonuses to the executives that oversaw the hideous losses that the bank incurred is to be paid back. Yep, that's right. And that brings the total payback amount to $59 million over the past year.

Maybe some of the failing US banks and investment firms should follow UBS's lead and try to recoup some of the money that they pissed out to the CEO's and other higher ups while they were busy covering up the real numbers and running their companies into the ground. How about we let the executives fund the bailouts instead of the damn taxpayers.
