Seems to be a trend today. It doesn't come as much of a shock that the flamboyant Mavericks owner likes to color outside the lines. With any luck, Martha Stewart's old cell is still decorated and ready for Marky Mark.

Alright, this happened during my move overseas, so my apologies for it being a couple weeks ex post facto. It was just too delicious to ignore.

In a case of what may be the worst timing in history, Mitchel Guttenberg was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in the federal pen for insider trading on November 3, and an angry mob lined up around the block waiting to cock punch this highball on his way out.

No Bonus for Goldman Executives

Just read this on WSJ.

Top Goldman Sachs Executives Will Not Receive Bonuses for 2008
By SUSANNE CRAIGArticle

The seven top executives at Wall Street firm Goldman Sachs Group Inc. will not receive bonuses for 2008, according to a Goldman spokesman.
The executives, including firm Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Lloyd Blankfein, asked the board's compensation committee that they receive no bonus and the board Sunday approved the request. As a result, the executives will only be eligible for their base salaries, $600,000 for each of the seven executives. In 2007, Mr. Blankfein took home $68.5 million in cash and stock.
"Our senior officers decided on this course of action because they believe it is the right thing to do," the spokesman said.

Best route to CFO

If my ultimate goal is to become CFO, which is better? Going the traditional Big 4 audit route, getting a CPA, and then lateral to the finance division of another company or taking part in a rotational finance program (such as that of JP Morgan), getting a CPA (no audit work experience necessary), and either stay or lateral to another company (possibly after a top MBA)?

Morgan Stanley

Yesterday, Gary Lynch, Morgan Stanley's Chief Legal Officer, sent a sternly worded letter to the MS staff warning them not to ever again leak confidential information about the firm's plans to anyone ever. Especially not those psycho business bloggers and media-types. Guess what, within a matter of hours, that same letter was popping up on sites across the Atlantic like British financial site, Here Is The City.

I particularly enjoyed this little paragraph here:

TIDBITS TO BRIGHTEN YOUR DAY!

Here’re a few tidbits to brighten your day and put a little lift in your walk as we make our way towards the sunny weekend:

-The Labor Department reported that the new-crew of fresh laid-off workers seeking unemployment benefits has soared last week to the likes not seen since right after the 9/11 attacks! Hurrah!

-Intel Corp cut more than $1 billion from its sales forecast, providing more evidence that few industries are safe from a clampdown on spending by businesses as well as consumers. Bu-ya!

-Walmart--the den of discount, has trimmed their expectations for full-year earnings; a sign of severe pullback in consumer spending that pummeled stocks early this week. Right on!

Who Is The Worst Economist?

Alan Reynolds

I love that Clusterstock is doing this thing. Isn't it about time some of these economists who were horribly wrong got called out for it? The title 'Economist' is lauded with such praise and reverence that we rarely stop to think that these guys could be totally full of crap. Being called one of the worst economists requires enough respect to get published in all the nation's major newspapers, magazines, business reviews, and academic publications, but also enough audacity to wildly claim that the 'The Housing Bubble' would be no trouble at all for the economy. Alan Reynolds was saying exactly that even as late as April 2008, amid the wreckage of the Bear Stearns collapse.

Investment Banking Bonus Matrix

For good reason everyone on the Street is talking about Michael Lewis' big Wall Street exposé, 'The End', in the upcoming issue of Portfolio Magazine. The guy really bitchslaps the model of greed and excess that put us in the economic hell hole we're in now. The Econompic Data blog, which makes awesome charts and other financial eye candy, put together a graphic representation of their favorite part of the Lewis piece: The Investment Banking Bonus Matrix. Behold as all the huge glorious wall street bonuses are explained in perfect clarity.
