Boutique Asset Management Career Path?

Thoughts on starting at a boutique asset management firm (2bn-4bn) in current industry outlook? Have been reading it may be hard to progress upwards and that salaries can thus remain low given smaller AUM. Those that don’t progress upwards, where do they go? are they able to move to more reputable shops despite coming from a no name boutique ?

What would the role be? What sort of AM firm? What other options do you have?

When I broke over from WM it was to a tiny $1B shop. I've worked my way up from there. I'll tell you that frequently just getting in the door is the hardest part.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
