From Investment Advisory to AM London - Advice

Hi all,

What advice would you give to someone trying to step over to AM from IA (low percentile IA shop) in London?

Background: US and Asia education - MSC Finance - Washington University in St. Louis and Singapore Management University. 3.9GPA. CFA 1 (likely CFA 2 in a few months) but no relevant internship experience in AM

Currently: finishing 1-year graduate program in large international bank with weak PB/WM house. Was offered a position with IA team but it's slow and I'm not learning/doing much.

I feel like the longer I stay the less opportunities I'll have in the future and I'm not improving any technical skill. I spend nights learning to code (R and Python mostly) and building paper portfolios to teach myself but seems hard getting past HR whenever I apply for a role online...any suggestions?

Thanks

I would recommend looking for smaller/niche groups as they don't tend to use the same intern/graduate hiring system as the larger asset managers. Look for jobs on the CFA jobs board and eFinancialcareers
