My group is cutting me loose and I am being moved to a new part of the firm to do irrelevant work

I was referred to my current role in Deal Advisory at Big 4 by a friend of mine. I applied to a specific team, went through the interview process and got a lower position on the same team than the position I originally applied for (original position was associate and I got analyst because only 1 year of experience prior). When hired I found out that I would be a rotational analyst, but was made to understand that this was more of a formality to bring me in because ultimately, the team that hired me did not do so for me to be rotated.

I began my role beginning of the year and did everything I could to succeed. I had some non-billable work from other groups but the vast majority of my billing came from my home team.

When my last project ended I was relieved due to the lift required to close the engagement, and was happy to get a light week. After that week I began networking with other members of my team and informing my staffing manager of my bandwidth to take on more work. After weeks of networking, coffee chats and basically begging for work I was thrown internal admin stuff to do until now.

This week I had a call with another team set up by my staffing manager. The call was basically a behavioural interview with 4 people (I was not informed that the call was an interview) and was asked after the fact to send over my resume.

I feel that I am being set up to get rotated for either a very long time or possibly permanently, to a team that is totally irrelevant to deal advisory and lives only in name in my area of the firm.

I am intending on letting my MD know that I want to stay because I genuinely enjoy the learning, work and development I have attained on the team thus far.

But in the meantime, has anyone else ever had a similar experience? If so, do you know why this occurred? I made every effort to integrate feedback, improve, network and be generally liked by my team but it seems that none of that ultimately mattered. Finally, if you were me what would you do?

Thanks so much.

Unfortunately, sometimes as a junior without a powerful mentor, you can be pushed around due to the vagaries of the firm.

Maybe they have headcount pressures, maybe they don’t see a need for you in the near future, maybe they like you but don’t think you’re a fit for their group.

But based on the behavior you described it just seems like they are pushing you out to a group you don’t want to be in. So if that’s the case, it might be time to start looking.
