Sophomore not sure what to do. Need advice

Hi all, I'm well into sophomore year at Dartmouth. Currently wanting to go into strategy consulting. I've been pursuing preprofessional clubs this term while also going to networking events. However, I feel like I'm on a downward trajectory. I haven't been able to get any interviews for the internships that I've applied for and haven't built the strongest network while here. On top of this, I don't really fit into the the traditional finance bro stereotype of going out and partying a lot and this completely fucked me over in the rush process here. It feels like I'm just grinding for no reason and it'll amount to nothing.

Hey there, fellow Dartmouth student! I can totally understand how you're feeling. The world of strategy consulting can be a tough nut to crack, but don't worry, you're not alone in this journey.

Firstly, it's great that you're involved in preprofessional clubs and networking events. These are fantastic ways to learn more about the industry and make connections. However, remember that networking is more about building genuine relationships rather than just collecting contacts. Try to find people who share your interests and values, and don't be afraid to reach out to them for advice or mentorship.

As for the internships, don't be disheartened by the rejections. It's a competitive field and everyone faces setbacks. Use this as an opportunity to improve your application and interview skills. Maybe you could seek feedback from the companies or do a mock interview with a career counselor or a trusted mentor.

And about the "finance bro" stereotype, remember that everyone has their own path. You don't have to fit into a certain mold to be successful in finance or consulting. In fact, firms value diversity and unique perspectives. So, stay true to yourself and don't let the social pressure get to you.

Lastly, remember that it's okay to take a step back and reassess your goals and strategies. Maybe you could consider other roles or industries that might be a better fit for your skills and interests. Or perhaps you could take some time off to recharge and refocus.

Remember, the journey to success is not a straight line. It's filled with twists and turns, ups and downs. But with perseverance and a positive attitude, you'll get there. Keep your chin up and keep pushing forward. You've got this!

Recruiting is tough across the board this year, I wouldn’t let it get to me too much if I was having difficuly as a sophomore. Try to get just anything, doesn’t have to be consulting. Business analyst at any semi well known company would be fantastic (P&G, Kraft-Heinz, legit whatever) and even something position at a random localizaed place would still be good. Don’t stress pre-prof clubs too much

trust the process. I also got rejected from every business club/frat I applied for on campus (7 times...). Made the decision freshman year to pursue my own interests throughout college, not just what I thought I should do to "optimize" my chances at MBB. Doing this has 2 benefits:

  1. You're fulfilled + happy with yourself, regardless of interview results
  2. It'll actually make your resume look more unique & stand out when it comes to MBB recruiting, compared to all the ppl in the same b-frats, etc
    1. Again, I'd be happy with my path regardless -- but I've gotten interviews at 2/3 MBB + more firms because I've taken the "nonconventional route" and stand out

You can only connect the dots in hindsight. It's really easy to feel hopeless in the moment. trust me, I've been there too for the majority of college. it's still early in recruiting season for sophomores -- and worst-case scenario, you just intern at a startup/smaller company (through networking) for the summer. You're at dartmouth, you'll be fine compared to 90% of the US population.
