Worst Ideas at Work?
Does anyone else every contemplate just making a career ending decision from time to time?
For example, any time someone senior to me on my deal team sends a PTO calendar block, I have the strongest urge to click "Propose New Time" and to give different dates with a memo stating "This works better for the deal team, thx."
Anyone else?
Sometimes I get tempted to respond to dumbass emails with what I really think. My director likes to pass along "praise" for the quality of the 10-k/q we are preparing. Mentioning how we do great work and that senior leaders and the board notice it. I want to respond with "and what the FUCK will that do for any of us? Jack shit. Do any of them know our names? Are they impressed by this work or just happy they don't have to do it??"
Or respond all to our CEO's company-wide blast addressing the latest social topic: "oh thank goodness we all now know what Wilson Leaderman has to say about this. The whole world was holding its breath to know what the CEO of the local Redacted company had to say on the topic. Thank you for your daring leadership, coincidence how it aligns perfectly with the approved narrative!"
+1 SB, I couldn't agree more on both accounts.
Hey at least your team is being viewed positively by the big dogs.
Regarding the company-wide email blasts from the C suite, that shit is so cringe. People at my last company actually were concerned when a statement wasn't sent out IMMEDIATELY following any major political or social unrest? I couldn't wrap my head around it. It is just a way for execs to say "Hey guys, I really care" without putting their money where their mouth is.
So what? Your director likes to give praise and wants you to know you do good work. How's that a bad thing? You sound like a dickhead.
When your director seems to think that praise will keep the team running and that the lack of career growth opportunities won't have any negative effects, the "praise" gets old, fast. Especially when the director is passing along praise that was directed at them and the team in general, and we are all just the nameless minions. You'll understand some day when you aren't just an intern
One of the few things I miss about working in the office is classic office pranks. A favorite of mine was putting some old tuna salad in the microwave on the accounting floor for like 20 minutes and just peacing out. Not sure if that's a career ender, but people got pretty pissed. I never really had gripes or reasons for doing this, other than being bored / had nothing better to do.
