Move from London to Amsterdam

Hi guys - I’ve been working for 3 years in Credit for a BB bank in London, and currently I’m feeling stuck in the role and in the city. I know that London offers way more career prospects and exit opportunities, but for the past year I be trying to look for a role in Amsterdam where I thought I could leverage my experience in less competitive environment but it doesn’t seem the case given the very low supply of jobs in finance. Any thoughts or advices ?

Hey there! It sounds like you're ready for a new adventure in Amsterdam - exciting times! I understand that the job market in finance might seem a bit limited compared to London, but don't let that discourage you.

Amsterdam is a growing hub for finance and has a lot to offer. While the market might be less competitive, it also means you could stand out more with your experience from a BB bank in London.

Remember, it's not just about the quantity of jobs, but the quality. It might take a bit more time and patience, but the right opportunity could still be out there.

In the meantime, consider expanding your network in Amsterdam. Networking can often open doors that you didn't even know were there. Also, consider reaching out to a recruitment agency that specializes in finance roles in Amsterdam. They might have insights into opportunities that aren't publicly advertised.

And hey, while you're at it, why not brush up on your Dutch? While it's not always a requirement for working in Amsterdam, it could give you an edge and show potential employers that you're committed to making a life there.

Remember, every big move comes with its challenges, but also its rewards. Keep your chin up and keep pushing forward. You've got this!

Finance jobs are definitely harder to come by in Amsterdam, though most major international banks do (at least) have an office. Your best shot is likely to be in the credit/corporate banking departments of either the three large Dutch banks ING/ABN/Rabobank or you may find a seat in the (smaller) departments of some larger regional banks/BBs.

For the larger regional banks: BNP Paribas, HSBC, MUFG, Santander
For the BBs: DB, Citi, BoA
The above all have a corporate banking department active in the Netherlands and seem to win the corporate clients based on their relationship with the client elsewhere already. Good luck (and PM me if you wish)!!

Agreed, that would be a good option for you.

You could also look into (if interested) PE funds. PE is quite big in the Netherlands and if you do want to leave banking for PE, Amsterdam may be a nice place to go pursue a career in PE.
