From ECM to ER
I am trying to move to ER after 2 yrs in ECM at an IFA. My day to day job also involved reading reports and looking at rankings of analysts (ANRs).
What is the best way to approach it?
Shall I shoot cold emails to analysts?
How should I articulate my interest in a sector when I am coming out of a product team?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from ECM (Equity Capital Markets) to ER (Equity Research) is a move that many have considered and successfully executed. Your experience in ECM, especially your exposure to analyst reports and rankings, can serve as a solid foundation for this transition. Here’s how you can approach it:
Leverage Your Current Network: Before resorting to cold emails, tap into your existing network. This includes colleagues, mentors, or contacts you've made through your role in ECM. They might provide introductions to analysts or offer advice on making the transition.
Cold Emails: If you decide to send cold emails, make sure they are personalized and demonstrate your genuine interest in the analyst's work. Highlight your experience in ECM, specifically how it has prepared you for a role in ER. Mention any specific reports or analyses you've found particularly insightful, showing that you've done your homework.
Articulate Your Interest in a Sector: When transitioning from a product team, it's crucial to show your passion for a specific sector. You can do this by:
Prepare for the Transition: Equity Research roles often require strong financial modeling skills. If this is an area where you need improvement, consider taking courses or certifications to bolster your skills. The WSO Financial Modeling Course is a great resource to consider.
Showcase Soft Skills: Equity Research involves a lot of communication, both in writing reports and in presenting findings to clients or team members. Highlight your communication skills and any experience you have in presenting complex information in an accessible way.
Remember, persistence is key. The transition might not happen overnight, but with the right approach and preparation, you can make a compelling case for your move from ECM to ER.
