How Easy Is It To Transition From HK To North America?

Monkeys:

I just wanted to ask a question about starting my career in Hong Kong. I would like to transition to North America eventually and the role is economist/research in FICC at a bulge bracket. How easy is the transition? Or do I have to go back and do an MBA?

Thanks.

Consensus advice on this forum that I've seen over and over (and heard from people that I've spoken to in the real world as well) is that a shift from HK back to the U.S., even an internal transfer within your firm, is hard. That advice was in reference to IBD, however, where perhaps there are greater differences between the business in Asia and North America (perhaps trading/research is perceived as more transferrable).

If you want to pursue a long-term career in the U.S., you are better off starting there. But Hong Kong is an incredible place, and if you're interested in Asia, I'd go for it (especially since it sounds like you've already locked down a good offer).
