how to improve strategic business analysis

basically this is still the area where i fail the most, and by that i mean that i fail to recognize ON MY OWN, peculiar risks and trends of a certain business model which is inserted in a certain industry. too many times i've read some research reports and i have realized: "my risk analysis is half wide and precise than the analyst's" or "how come i missed this important trend that is going on with suppliers?". i am familiar with the typical strategy business models (SWOT,Porter) but i fail to translate said frameworks into reality.

is there any place (blog/book/website) where they can help me bridge this gap? or is it simply a matter of experience and a lack of knowledge of a certain sector?

1) Education - read as many books on strategy and analysis as you can get time for, starting with the biggies like Competitive Strategy.

2) Familiarize - when you aren't reading the books for a more educational approach, read technical papers relevant to your sector. You might only pick up one or two new catalysts/details for every handful of papers you read, but keep it up and you'll soon realize that you're watching out for a million little details as opposed to the dozen you're aware of now. And then, because you've got the education from (1), you'll suddenly realize you're connecting the dots on your own and your analysis finally stands out from the pack. This stuff doesn't happen overnight!
