I don't have one personally but my friend does. From what he's said, he wears it both when diving and just walking around. Reason why is that it looks really well, and he's often found other people with similar watches that helps spark up a conversation.

Personally I think for under $1000 the best brands you can go for are Seiko (SKX007K2 Divers are pretty good) and Aulta. Oris Divers 65 are also good but are around $1200 so either increase your budget slightly or see if you can find 2nd hand ones under $1000.

Note of caution: these watches are for the 'diver watch' look and I would be careful about their practical use. Use them in water above 10m but if you're going diving 30m+ the cheapest reliable divers I would trust are Oris or Tudors.
