PM Breeding Grounds

Hey everyone,

I've just been doing some research on hedge funds and the industry and I came across something I found interesting. As I was looking into Caxton Associates, I looked into Bruce Kovner's history. He started at Commodities Corporation (bought by GS in 1997). The list of alumnus is very impressive, including Paul Tudor Jones, Louis Bacon, Bruce Kovner, Jack Schwarger and Ed Seykota. These are some of the best traders/PMs ever. This reminds me also of Tiger Global and the Tiger cubs.

So my question is, with leading hedge fund manager breeding grounds like this clearly going on, why/how are they so successful in creating successful alumnus? Also, what are some other of these kinds of shops?

Thanks

Hey guys, thanks for both of those responses.

@The Real Gordon Gekko: not as familiar with Discovery, but DE Shaw is certainly a top notch firm. @MMmonkey: I never realized what was actually going on at that shop, and it seems like some super smart people doing some interesting things. Thanks for the link.

Any know of any other examples, past or current?
