Reinventing Oneself

I worked at a small fund. I was a trader, but also did some analysis work. I have a CFA, but didn't go to a focus school or a banking program. I know I can do analysis because I have helped with it in the past. But my title was as an execution trader. How do I break free of that? I want to be an analyst. My fund recently shut down, so I'm in search mode.

Start with writing your resume in a way that's in your favor. Write about the things you did that you want to continue doing and minimize those things you don't really want to do going forward. When you interview, do the same thing.

Thank you. Should I try and write up a pitch to show I can do it? Is it worthwhile?
Well, it's only worthwhile if you actually can do it and can back it up in an interview. I don't know if you can do that. If you can, then yes it's worth it.

Whatever it is you want to do, START DOING IT. I wanted to leave equities and get back into Fixed Income, so I started by opening a personal account and buying some bonds in it. I did that more and more and six months later I quit and started a Fixed Income hedge fund. It's stupid, but doing something is the best proof you can do it. No excuses. Do it now.

What job would you like to do? The reality is that you just want to start working again, but recruiters are somewhat oblivious to this reality....something about HR just speaks to "does not know what extreme productivity or desperation are, only mediocrity". Try and get a feel for that and then build your resume in that direction, and you can do this with multiple objectives.

Offhand, I'm thinking you can look for trading and research associate.

Get busy living

Tone down trading on your CFA, change your role to Analyst and say it was a small fund so did the execution and analysis as I was most junior or something.

Pitch yourself as the product you want to be and make sure when it comes to interview that you really can do a DCF, you know the ins and outs of RV
