Summer Internships

I'm a sophomore at Cornell University studying Government with limited experience in finance and hedge funds. However, I'm interested in applying for Summer Financial Internships and I just wanted to know if there are any programs that you'd recommend I'd apply for?

Ah, a fellow aspiring financier from the hallowed halls of Cornell! Diving into the world of finance with a background in Government is both exciting and challenging, but fear not, for the world of finance is vast and filled with opportunities for the keen learner.

Based on the highest ranked content on WSO, here are a few recommendations tailored for someone in your unique position:

  1. Explore Leadership Programs: Many financial institutions offer Sophomore Leadership Programs, which are designed to give you a broad overview of the financial services industry. These programs often include rotations through different departments, providing a well-rounded experience. The Summer Citi Sophomore Leadership Program, for example, is a rotational leadership program where students rotate through three different groups across the bank, including investment banking, sales and trading, corporate banking, and more. This could be a fantastic way to get your foot in the door and learn more about the divisions you might be interested in.

  2. Networking and Externships: Start building your network now. The advice from the WSO content emphasizes the importance of getting to know people in the industry as early as possible. Applications for externships and internships open in the fall, and having a strong network can significantly boost your chances. These opportunities are not only a great way to learn but also to demonstrate your interest and commitment to a career in finance.

  3. Target Boutique Firms: Given your current limited experience in finance and hedge funds, applying to local boutique investment banks or hedge funds could be a strategic move. These firms might offer a more hands-on experience and could be more open to candidates with diverse academic backgrounds. It's a way to gain relevant experience that can make you a more competitive candidate for larger firms in the future.

  4. Utilize University Resources: Cornell University likely has a career services department and alumni network that can provide guidance and potentially connect you with internship opportunities. Leveraging these resources can provide you with tailored advice and connections to opportunities that align with your interests and academic background.

Remember, the key is to start early, be proactive in your search, and don't be discouraged by your current lack of finance experience. Many in the finance world value diverse perspectives, and your background in Government could provide you with a unique lens through which to view and solve financial problems. Good luck on your journey into the world of finance internships!
