Asking for an Internal Transfer - NEED ADVICE

Hi guys,

I need some advice on a situation I'm having. I started working at a MM bank in SF as a first-year IB analyst in Aug. Like many other people, I want to break into the buy-side, but specifically Growth Equity. I also really do not like SF, and want to move to NY for social reasons and to be closer to home. I received an email from HR saying that our bank's GE team in NY is looking to hire an analyst. I've been told that they're also interviewing people outside the bank and obviously I need to interview and go through the same process as everyone else. If I decide to go ahead and do an interview I need to speak with my staffer and get their permission first. Obviously this is something I want to do, but given I've been at the bank for less than a year I can't help but think they'd be pretty mad at me. Since there's a decent chance I won't get this role, there's a risk that I do the interview and need to go back to my team in SF who then knows I'm trying to dip maybe earlier than expected.

Is it worth having this convo and going for the interview? or should I just quietly recruit elsewhere?
