Banks that sponsor NYC vs London
Hi, I'm an international student enrolled in an Ivy League uni. I've found it so incredibly difficult to get an offer from a BB in NYC (I have an offer from my home country) but I'm really looking to work in a financial center straight out of college. I'm now realizing that it may be remarkably easier to get an offer from a London BB. Would appreciate any comments on this list:
GS: case-by-case for NYC, yes for London
MS: no for NYC, yes for London
JPMC: definitely no for NYC, yes for London
DB: yes for both NYC and London
CS: yes for both NYC and London
Citi: case-by-case for NYC, yes for London
Barclays: definitely no for NYC, yes for London
UBS: no for NYC, yes for London
I also heard that it's easier to break into S&T than IBD. Does anyone have any good recon?
Just wanted to add that Jefferies sponsors in the US for all of its offices. Know multiple international students that got offers.
Good to know!
i thought ubs sponsors?
I have no idea. But a few international friends and I received rejections within a few hours (same with JPMC) so I figured that they may have strong residence requirements. Found a few WSO and Reddit threads indicating the same.
Nothing to add, but wish you luck! I'm an Intl at an Ivy. Mind if I dm you ?
Thanks and sure!
US School > London is not easy if you have no prior connection to the UK. If you're at Harvard, Wharton, or to a lesser extent Yale and Princeton, you *might* get interviews, but if you're at any other Ivy just forget about it. Most people in the UK have never heard of Brown or Dartmouth or non-Wharton UPenn.
However - if you have an undergraduate ivy degree and do a masters at Oxbridge/LSE, you will indeed almost assuredly secure something (particularly post COVID)..... worth a thought
That's fair! I've been thinking about doing exactly that actually. I'm from Columbia so I don't assume that my school name will get me interviews for sure.
Even going to Harvard doesn’t mean its going to be a target, rather that HR will know your school exists. Whether they consider it a target or not will come down to literally the HR worker that is looking at your CV. Some will place it somewhere along Oxbridge & the big London schools while others will put it at the same level that the secondary continental european schools.
Fair!
insight on BAML, RBC, Guggenheim, and the EBs?
BAML yes Guggenheim no the others not sure
hmm surprised that Gugg and JPM don't sponsor
Yes for all three
Also, should've clarified that I have an offer from a BB in my home country (big Asian city)--not sure how to leverage this to get something in NYC or London without screwing myself over.
As an international that just went through recruiting in London, I can say that almost everyone sponsored. The only places that didn't were Standard Chartered, Aviva Investors, Moelis, and Centerview. There may be some more that I'm not aware of.
Thanks for this! Yeah, I'm so jealous of my friends who went the UK route. I don't know anyone from my home country who managed to get sponsorship in NYC without having massive connections.
moelis sponsors (int'l student who got an offer)
lol being an international is a curse in the US - try to go to London.
As a first year analyst, you will continue to face barriers - difficult to move to PE, impossible to lateral banks etc.
only gets harder - sad that students from schools like columbia are struggling with IBD jobs in the US
why is impossible to lateral? once you get your h-1b lateraling shouldn't be a huge problem with firms that are willing to sponsor i'd assume (GS, Citi, BAML, CS, Evercore, etc.)
Aw man, really? Are hedge funds the same? Everyone keeps encouraging me to try for NYC again/go to business school but I don't want to flesh out another 100k only to be stuck in the cesspool of being a second-class candidate. This pretty much reveals where I'm from but I'm available for H1B1 too and honestly, I don't think it's helped me at all. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I've only /not/ gotten immediately rejected by GS, CS, DB, BAML, and Citi.
Could you elaborate on the lateraling part? I would have expected all the banks to be open for people who have the H1B sponsorship.
just got rejected for 2022 UBS, so i think they don’t sponsor anymore
so sorry to hear that :/ I've heard similar stories about 2021 recruitment so I don't think it's anything new.
International sophomore here as well. Did you consider trying to get a IB role, not in a BB (EB/MM)? I got an offer as an international student for summer 2022 and even though I was tested harder than my American peers, I don't think it was impossible to get a good offer. I can PM you if you want
yep pls pm me!
done
Hi may I also ask for a pm? thx!!
Does TD sponsor in UK?
