Does this mean I more or less am guaranteed a first round interview?
Hi all,
So at the advice of fellow WSO-ers, I have been cold-emailing alum/random contacts over the past two weeks expressing interest in their firms and trying to set up info interviews.
I've had pretty decent success, and managed to contact two fairly senior people (Managing Director and Director -- whats the difference btw?) at two BBs.
For BB1 I got an email from the recruiter responsible for SA hiring saying that she got my info from the MD, and that I should email my resume to her, as well as apply online, and that I will be contacted "should there be any next steps".
For BB2, the Director asked for me for a resume, then told me to contact a recruiter myself if I had any questions, etc. I just emailed her with some generic questions and am waiting on a response.
My question is -- given that my resume is okay (Top 5 school, ivy target, GPA 3.7, altho no direct finance exp), does this more or less mean that I have first rounds at these banks? They both recruit directly at my school as well.
I know there's no way to tell for sure, but if this is a positive enough sign, then I will probably stop cold-emailing more people from those banks and focus on other ones.
Also -- I haven't had an actual info interview with either of these people yet, and they've been very willing to help me. Goes to show how nice some people at the senior level are!
Anyway, any advice from people with experience is much appreciated!
Thanks.
It does not necessarily mean that you're guaranteed an interview but given your stats you should be fine. What are you majoring in?
Economics.
I feel like my stats are pretty average considering the pool that I will be compared with, but I was hoping a tip from a director/md might push me in the yes pile for interviews?
Does any have direct experience with getting interviews through networking/cold email contacts?
Yeah, I never applied to IBD, but I got a reference from a partner at a mutual funds company that I was originally denied from, and it ended up landing me my junior year internship. Having a reference from an MD/Director and your stats should get you at least an interview.
Did the MD/Director take a look at your resume?
The MD/director can definitely push you into the 'interview' pile. Since you go to a target, your resume will (most likely) be reviewed by the recruiting team at the bank (primarily made up of bankers who are alums). If the MD is on that recruiting team, you'll have a great shot.
The MD isn't on the recruiting team...does this change things? This is just an MD that I contacted through cold-emailing...
It does change things a bit but having a recommendation from anyone that's senior can only help. Target school recruiting is completely a numbers and network game with the alums as its main players. The HR team merely helps facilitate but can at least denote that an applicant has been "MD-flagged".
