Pull the filings. First day declarations will explain the events leading up to bankruptcy and disclosure statements / PORs will explain the rationale for the restructuring plan.
Any way to do this without PACER and paying $3 a document?
In short, no.
It's the cheapest way to get that info.
You could also sign up for trials of the major providers like Reorg, download as much as possible etc
Nearly all large cases now have claims agents that post the entire docket online for free. Just search the company name + bankruptcy docket and it will usually be one of the first results. For example, instead of paying like 10 cents per page using PACER / court websites (which are among the worst, least intuitive sites to exist), type in “Neiman Marcus Bankruptcy Docket” and Stretto has the entire easily accessible docket. Kroll restructuring administration seems to be another big one, among others.
You can usually find entire dockets online. Check Kroll (used to be PrimeClerk), for example, who has a ton of names.
not sure if you've seen the HL case study - it's good IMO.
