How many hours are you putting in RIGHT NOW?
A PE principal said that he never left the office before 1-2 for 7 years, everyday, in IB. He became a VP too.
80 hour weeks as the norm before weekends Seems a bit crazy.
Especially when you could lateral to a more lax group.
I’m not sure how you find time to do your laundry, dishes, shower, or groom at that point.
So don’t massage your hours. Give a range as well as your level.
30 hours a week of real work. Analyst 2.
Anyone that puts that much time into work for a decade is a psychopath and lives a sad life. No offense to anyone that's done it.
probably 25 hours per week, but mostly in the office pretending to be busy. I like it.
What do you do to pass the time?
The firm has online courses, but also just doing daily work really really well.
50-60 hours per week of actual work, and on-call for ~75
^this is probably the most realistic answer. Often times that work is later at night too which makes your days feel longer.
70 hours per week AN1
~20 hrs of actual work. On call for 80
People love to bloat their hours. Reality is while you’ll have hell weeks here and there with 100 hours, as long as your team is chill you can get away with 50-60 hours of real work. The real kicker is just having to be available until 2am or something to respond to pings and such and show ppl you’re responsiveness. Most people take breaks during the day to gym, chill, dinner. It’s manageable if you’re good.
that said, if you’re working with hardos good luck. That can result in constant 90 hour weeks that are completely unnecessary. After you’re at a bank for awhile you can identify the hardos and proactively avoid getting staffed with them
^^This. Availability and response to pings till late into the night is expected (and is honestly pretty damn fair), but in terms of ACTUAL WORK, if you are really putting in more than 60hrs consistently for months on end you're at a shit bank/group and should bounce somewhere that has a functioning staffing system. There are are many of these banks, they just aren't circle-jerked by the college sophomores on this forum.
This is also why WFH is so looked favorably because you can fill those empty pockets of time in the day with anything.
~30-40 hours of actual work, 30 hours of calls
Second year analyst
As a first year during COVID we got destroyed: hours were very long and lots of turnover where we actually were working 80+ of actual work. Now in my second year: larger Analyst class, slower markets, and seniority of being a 2nd year, maybe doing 40-50 hours of actual work.
100-120 per week right now, starting to taper off as this assignment slows down. But I’m not in finance presently.
Cap
I’m a soldier lol
Lol what? I'm an AN1 at a BB in NYC and I probably "work" like 25 hours a week MAX, on call for all of the week no duh but dude, no one actually works 80 hours lmfao that's just a meme people do to bloat their work. Same with "I missed your email, my bad" nope, no emails are ever actually missed bro, we just ignored it lol
---
Congrats on your tough hours. Do you want a cookie to go with that?
don't know, don't care plus we make the same salary
Do you mind posting in the thread where people talk about banks to avoid because of hardos?
What bank is this haha? Sounds fucking awesome dude lmao
bump
Mid tier BB generally have better hours (fewer deal flow and type A ppl). Was at one before moving for prestige and regret it instantly. Trying to move back for live style but need to stick it out a while. 80 hours week (real work) is the average for my team and my group isn’t even known to be sweaty
AN2, last week about 35 hours of actual work.
What are ppl in power IB / infra investing doing?
sounds like all the groups are 80+
Is infra known to be worse hours?
15 hours on Sunday and 15 hours combined the rest of the days
Dang, are you in the office during that time in the week? What do you do all day then
Don't really go in the days I don't have anything. Last week I only went in once. Just suck since we always need to be available so can't really do much.
Generally 50-65 hours of real work plus 20-30 hours of just being "on-call". There are genuinely some weeks where shit gets fucked, and I think the most hours of real work I've done in IB is 105-110 hours.
If you guys are doing only 35-45 hours of real work? What do the remaining hours go to?
