Informational Interview Geniuses, how do you start conversations to create likability?

Are there any specific questions you ask that immediately put the big MD opposite you at ease. Any other specific (rather than ambiguous ones) tricks that you use to increase likability. Here I would appreciate a focus on specific words, terms, and questions. I of course understand and respect that "meta" school of thought (listen, nod your head, ask open-ended questions) but that's been discussed quite a lot anyways.

For example, one nice example that I came across was the first question that they guy asks the MD was "what do you do in your vactions/free time?" That instantly puts a light tone on things and makes the student not seem like a typical finance bro. Also allows a rapport to be maid and can lead to further conversation about sports/vacations spots that you might like as well (fulfilling the "meta" concept of similarity).

Cheers!

To be honest, "what you do in your vacations/free time"as a FIRST question sounds awful. It comes across as trying way too hard to be casual. Also creates the impression that you're not taking his time seriously by asking him about his career or experiences. I think it's an okay question to ask toward the end when you've built some rapport though, as a light break into talking about something "dull" again afterward.

To be honest, I don't think investment banking is about doing anything "special" at any point. It's executing at a higher level than anyone else which is what helps you stand out, and I think that goes for informationals as well. If you are well prepared, well informed, show genuine interest, and are able to intelligent respond, then that's more than sufficient. It sounds like you're trying to find a shortcut that creates instant amicability, which IMO isn't possible.

Be humble. Hopefully you have a shared interest that you can talk about with him that's said at a good point in the discussion so it doesn't seem contrived.
