MD tells me I'm the top analyst
So today one of my MDs called me into his office for a random conversation. He goes on and asks me how things are going and getting an update from me on work. I should preface this by saying that I've been killing it since I started (non-target @ EB, very unconventional bg), and surprising a ton of people on my team with my quality of work. He then started giving me feedback on how well I've done and how I can take that next step. Finally, he said, "I'll tell you something but keep this between us - you're one of the strongest first year's we've hired for a few years now and definitely the leader of your class. Make sure you carry them alongside you and they improve and learn from you"
This would be great news but I have some thoughts on this. 1) Recently, we lost a bakeoff to another firm on a deal I worked on and heavily was involved in discussions around positioning. A lot of my suggestions weren't implemented and ultimately when we got feedback some of those points were raised. This obviously built up some frustration in me which I didn't explicitly state but was clear from my expression lol
2) I networked a ton while recruiting and I've had a ton of recruiters reach out to me wanting to know if I'd be interested in lateraling to a BB. I got coffee with a senior associate I built a good relationship with at one of the BBs I was most interested in last week just to catch up and he was really impressed with the sort of work I was doing and how polished I'd gotten over such a short amount of time. He said his team is reshaping itself after they've thought on how to strategize for the markets rebound and if I ever want, they are a call away. I think my MD knows this. Without getting into specifics, this guy is extremely well connected and hears whispers in the market and the street on everything.
This guy is an absolute chad rainmaker. I think he's selling me this team, making it seem like I'm the diamond and doing what he does best - closing and making sure I don't budge for atleast the near term. It does sound sincere though. I don't have big desires to leave but I'm unsure of wanting to work with an MD who plays mind games with literally the most junior person of the organization - especially when there are seemingly a ton of options. Curious if anyone has any similar experiences.
if you're tired go to bed my dude
Lmao dude there are no whispers in the market about some analyst potentially talking to some associate about lateraling. And nobody is going to take your suggestions seriously but the fact that he brought up how you're doing means people are noticing. Good job
Does your MD have many lovers or a girlfriend in every city?
Dude relax
Every group/team has a “top analyst” and conversations like yours are had every year
Also, no mandate was won or lost based upon your inputs
We get it man, you’re a good analyst. Don’t really see the need for this post other than to get circlejerked
The whole whispers in the market about a non-target first year analyst at an EB looking to lateral line is just insanity. Thanks for sharing. In all seriousness, if your MD is good and you enjoy working for him, congrats. Ride the wave as long as you can. If you don’t like working for him, look to bounce. It’s pretty simple. Often times too many people over analyze these situations, especially since we are in an over analyzing industry. Good luck.
Guy sounds like a lot of fun to work with lol
