Pharmaceutical Industry
What do you guys think of the pharmaceutical industry given the current economic situation. I feel like if people are sick and need drugs they'll buy from pharma companies no matter what. I think its a good industry to get into now, thoughts?
do you mean as a job or as a stock?
As a job....Seems like almost recession proof, people need drugs.
...I call bullshit.
Understand that pharmaceuticals (SECTOR) are all about pipeline.
There are only a handful of companies that have a decent pipeline. With drugs getting pulled off the market after undergoing follow up clinical trials, the longer FDA approval process, NDA's getting pulled/R&D shrinking for lack of resources/funding (especially in this market), pharma is just as dangerous. Companies such as J&J, Merck are pulling back and shrinking headcount on their various subsidiaries, albeit J&J focuses on more than just pharma.
Overall, the Healthcare INDUSTRY can be considered recession proof. Just keep in mind that being a 3rd year financial analyst and being a doctor/nurse/some sort of medtech engineer are not the same thing.
in this environment, bankruptcy/restructuring advisory is whats up. sell-side M&A as well if there are buyers interested (or with resources).
