Roll-Up Investments

Hey all,

So for background, I work at a start up PE firm in Canada, and their entire focus is to invest in what the managing partner calls legacy industries and roll up the space. The firm has 4 platform investments in Aviation, Trucking, Chemical Manufacturing, and Manufacturing. I was wondering. The work has been great and I have got a lot of hands on experience, but it is a little difficult for me to fully understand those industries. I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations for books or specific industry primers for those industries: Aviation, Trucking, chemical Manufacturing, and Manufacturing.

Thank you

For a deep dive into the industries you're working with at your PE firm, here are some tailored recommendations based on the highest ranked content on WSO and other relevant sources. These resources should provide you with a solid foundation and understanding of each sector:

Aviation

  • "Straight to Hell" by John Lefevre: While not exclusively about aviation, this book offers insights into the competitive and complex nature of the business world, including the aviation sector. It touches on the dynamics between aircraft OEMs and engine manufacturers, which are crucial to understanding the aviation industry's structure.
  • Industry Reports and Analysis: Look for annual reports from major aircraft manufacturers like Boeing (BA) and Airbus (EADSY) for insights into the aviation industry's trends, challenges, and future outlook.

Trucking

  • "The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger" by Marc Levinson: This book, although focused on shipping containers, provides valuable context on the logistics and transportation industry, including trucking. It explains how this innovation revolutionized transport and logistics, directly impacting the trucking sector.
  • Industry Associations: Explore resources from industry associations such as the American Trucking Associations (ATA) for reports, trends, and statistics that give a comprehensive view of the trucking industry.

Chemical Manufacturing

  • "The Alchemy of Air" by Thomas Hager: This book narrates the fascinating history of the Haber-Bosch process and its impact on chemical manufacturing. It provides an engaging way to understand the significance of chemical innovations.
  • Trade Publications: Journals like Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) offer articles, industry news, and reports that can keep you updated on the latest developments in chemical manufacturing.

Manufacturing

  • "The Goal: A Process of Ongoing Improvement" by Eliyahu M. Goldratt: A classic in the manufacturing and operations management field, this book introduces the Theory of Constraints through a compelling narrative. It's a must-read for anyone looking to understand manufacturing processes and efficiency.
  • Industry Reports: Look for manufacturing industry reports from consulting firms like McKinsey & Company or Deloitte. These reports often contain analyses of current trends, challenges, and future outlooks for the manufacturing sector.

Remember, beyond books, staying current with industry news through reputable publications, joining relevant forums on platforms like WSO, and networking with industry professionals can also greatly enhance your understanding of these sectors.

Talk to your partners and spend time with your portfolio companies. You will never learn as much from a book. Hell, see if you can spend some time shadowing their team in office, or even work out of one company’s office once a week if it isn’t too far, and rotate through the 4. Especially for a smaller firm in Canada, everything will be too local to leverage some book on the US aviation space
