SIE advantage?
Greetings fellow apes and other wonderful primates,
I have some IB interviews coming up, but I'm not super sure about my chances just yet. I have a commercial banking offer on the table and if they don't work out, I'll take that gig. Now, I'd like to try either IB or CB, I wouldn't mind either, just something that has a good career progression.
However, assuming my IB rounds don't work out this time, what can you tell me about the SIE exam? Is it worth taking on my own dime before applying again? Does it help at all with interviews to CB and IB? I am also looking at studying for the CFA as well just cause.
All info is welcome! Cheers, madlads!
Don’t think taking the SIE yourself will help. Honestly, not even sure taking the CFA would help for IB specifically.
The CFA is mostly just cause I'd like to get to test my own in depth knowledge against the course material, but I understand that it isn't necessarily an advantage. I was hoping the SIE might be good for a leg up, but understandable why it isn't. Thanks for the response!
Do not waste time on CFA if trying to get into IB. Even the SIE is a stretch (and only should be like ~20 hours).
If you were coming from another industry then SIE could make sense to show demonstrated interest, but give you’ll be in commercial banking think there’s an easier story to tell/show.
I'll definitely try to leverage the commercial banking gig if IB, DCM doesn't work out. Thanks for the input!
No. Expectation is that you will pass the SIE, so having it done already means nothing. Once you have an offer the bank will pay for a prep course for you. Don’t worry about it til then.
Ah, I see. I was thinking maybe I'm being smart about it, but understandable why it's not worthwhile. Well, about 600 bucks or so saved in my pocket. Thanks for the feedback!
Just do your best to get promoted in your commercial banking role would likely help the most. I have been doing Commercial/Corporate banking for less than a year and they want to make me a PM.
Trying to move from there to say a leveraged Finance role would make you look more attractive. You could also try capital markets.
That sounds really promising and it's what I figured my plan should be. I almost got an opportunity straight for Associate in commercial, but have sadly only made it to an Analyst offer thus far. Do you mind if I ask you a few more in depth questions in private?
