Switching groups soph to junior year

Fortunate to have a BB soph IB internship this summer but didn't get the group I wanted. How does one go about switching groups from soph to junior year summer. I've seen people on Linkedin do it but is it inappropriate if I just reach out to them and ask? Does one just network with other groups throughout the summer and then ask to see if you can get a return offer at another group? Or would I have to go through group placement day all over again next year?

Would love if anyone who can shed light on this.

I did internal mobility between my junior year summer internship and full time, and I became close with a couple sophomore summer interns who were going through internal mobility with respect to their junior year summer.

Not sure what bank you’re at, but I’d recommend committing to the group you’ve been assigned to for the summer. The opportunity for internal mobility will present itself later down the line (mid/late summer), and the thing that will matter most is how you’ve performed in your current group.

People in your current group generally won’t care that you’re trying to transfer groups, but still do your best to avoid making it known until finalized. If you know people outside the group (such as alumni), I’d recommend eventually reaching out to them & seeing if they know anyone who did internal mobility. If so, you can then connect with someone who knows more about your bank’s specific process.

If you do well as a sophomore intern, the bank will want to keep you. It shouldn’t be difficult to transfer groups, but make sure you’re thoughtful with the moves you make. Keep it lowkey, but character matters. Once I really started pursuing the mobility process (got the sense my networking would become interviewing soon), I told my bosses. I knew that HR would inform them I was interested in internal mobility at some point, but I wanted them to hear it from me first.

Every conversation I had ended with my bosses / superiors offering to call up people they knew / recommend me to whoever necessary in order to help me get the group I wanted. This is because I had great attitude & worked hard all summer, and i really respected the people I interned with.
