To Intern or Not To Intern

Given a lack of internship would you guys and gals recommend that someone graduating in May of next year apply for FT analyst positions or off-cylce internship positions (same firm)? My professors say go for FT slots but I feel like an internship would help my chances of landing a spot at a better firm.
