Urgent Question to Those who have lateraled

What is the best way to answer why you are looking to make the move?

I am lateraling from a bottom BB to a top BB, and plan to just answer it will be a much stronger platform, better learning experience, better deal flow so more deal reps, etc.

I mention that I loved my old team and had a good experience but only caveat is that i mainly worked on pitches and the live transactions I was on my bank always had a small role. Might toss in that my deal teams wern't lean either and i wasnt learning as much as i want to

What is the balance between saying all this "bad stuff" and that "hurting" my offer chances? If that makes sense. Should I go easy on saying oh i didnt take a lot of responsibility on deals (smaller deal firms) oh i only worked on pitches etc

Thoughts? Thanks you

When discussing your reasons for moving from a bottom BB to a top BB during an interview, it's crucial to focus on the positive aspects of the move rather than the negatives of your current position. Here are some strategies to consider:

  1. Emphasize Growth and Learning Opportunities: Highlight that the move is motivated by a desire to further your professional development. Mention that the top BB offers a stronger platform which aligns with your career goals, such as better learning opportunities and more substantial deal flow.

  2. Speak Positively About Your Current Role: While you can mention that you've had limited exposure to live transactions and a desire for more hands-on experience, it's important to frame this positively. For example, you could say, "I've gained valuable experience at my current firm, particularly in preparing pitches, which has provided me with a solid foundation. However, I'm looking to build on this by taking on more responsibility in live transactions, which I believe I can achieve at [Top BB]."

  3. Focus on Aspirations, Not Limitations: Instead of focusing on what your current role lacks, discuss what you hope to achieve in the new role. Talk about your eagerness to work in leaner deal teams and your ambition to contribute more significantly to projects.

  4. Professional Development: Express your enthusiasm for joining a team that aligns with your professional values and aspirations, where you can contribute effectively and learn from experienced colleagues.

By maintaining a positive tone and focusing on your career aspirations and the opportunities the new role presents, you can navigate the conversation without casting a negative light on your current position. This approach not only shows your professionalism but also your forward-thinking mindset, which is highly valued in the industry.
