US MBA programs for a Canadian looking to move permanently
Hi. I work in investment banking currently in Toronto Canada. I came from a Canadian target. GPA is a 3.0/Major is 3.9. I currently work in investment banking in fintech IB at a boutique (no name but respectable in the fintech industry serving a large client base). My previous experience is an investment banking analyst at another boutique in M&A (no name) , and a full year coop at a very large private firm in Toronto. I am looking to do a masters in the US so I can move there, re recruit for better firms and gain greater access to opportunities and network. I’d be looking to start planning soon so I can study for my GMAT and make up for my low gpa. Are there any schools that would fit my profile and career trajectories? I want to eventually work in technology investment banking at a FT partners or Qatalyst for example.
I previously made a post about MS in finance programs and I was told that this wouldn’t help me as they’re for people who want to recruit from undergrad and try again so I wouldn’t fit this profile.
Try Rochester have heard of a decent amount of Canadians that went there or other schools ranked 30-50 in US News. Hope this helps. Would appreciate SBs and lmk if you have specific Qs.
USC’s MF program has worked for a handful of Canadians in the past
Curious about this; do you know if they give scholarships? What kind of placements did they land?
I'm Canadian did my undergrad and my gradschool in the US. I know lots of other internationals who came to a US school with the idea that they would stay here permanently. Please do not bank on the idea that just because you went to school in the US you will get a job here, especially going somewhere like Rochester. I'm getting my MBA at a target school and the question of "will you need visa sponsorship" is always one of the first things I am asked in an interview, (thankfully I'm married to an American so I no longer need sponsorship), but I am sure that would count against me if I did.
Internationals are an added expense and headache, while some banks will be willing to sponsor internationals for a visa, the pool of banks willing to do so is much smaller. You also have to ask yourself given internationals are an added cost and headache, who is a bank more willing to sponsor for a visa? A Canadian who went to a non-target vs a Chinese student who went to a target school.
Feel free to DM if you have questions
Do you think its unrealistic as a career switcher (currently in government) to expect any safety in a T15 USA MBA as a Canadian? The risk seems huge after F1+OPT is done, and with an expensive USA degree where Canadian comp does not compare it feels questionable to me.
